A standard drywall does not provide the soundproofing features you may want in a home theatre or to muffle noise generated in a particular room. Welk & Sons specializes in sound proofing and uses very specific, high quality sound deadening or sound dampening products to accomplish this, such as:
RC-1 is a resilient metal channel that is inserted between drywall and the studwork so that the two are no longer connected directly.
RC-1 acts as a shock absorber
to reduce vibrations
coming from either side of the wall. It is extremely important to install RC-1
channels correctly. In most cases, using RC-1 by itself is not adequate. Other materials and techniques are needed as well,
depending upon the size of the space and the desired
sound deadening required for the space.
A hat channel performs a similar function as the RC-1 channel; however, it is coupled with resiliant sound isolation clips.
Because the clips
are spaced 24” and 48” apart, there are far fewer contact points between the drywall and the wood frame.
This mechanical isolation helps to limit the direct conduction of vibration from the drywall to the studs.
The second important feature of the resilient clip and hat channel system is the introduction of resilience. Because the channel is attached every 48” by a resilient clip, the 48” span is allowed to flex slightly. This flex is very important to the systems overall performance.
When installed between the noise source and a secondary surface, vibration isolation feet will minimize sound radiation through floors, walls,
ceilings and other surfaces such as sheet metal, fiberglass, glass and plastic. Effectively controlling vibration will result in a decrease in
airborne noise.
Soundbreak® sheetrock gypsum board has an acoustically enhanced, high density gypsum core encased in a heavy, abrasion
and mold/mildew/moisture resistant, 100% recycled, purple paper on both sides. It is superior sound deadening, cost-efficient
material that is easily finished and decorated in the same manner as standard gypsum board.

From Soundproofing back to Home
Most soundproofing products have a STC rating. STC is an acronym for "Sound Transmission Class". It rates a material's ability to resist airborne sound transfer. In general, a higher STC rating blocks more noise from transmitting through a wall, ceiling or movable object such as a speaker.
